Probably
the greatest difficulty facing coaches at higher levels in the game today
is putting structures into place that will enable the attacking to be
effective from phase play.
In this presentation backline specialist coach Barry Honan looks at a
simple set of structured plays, all controlled by the nominated “first
receiver(s)” which make use of penetrators coming
from depth – but with the added advantage that all players participating
in, or supporting the attacking play know exactly where the attack is
directed, dramatically improving ball retention at the breakdown.
The “brick wall”-like defences that appear at ruck and maul
in the modern game, especially when possession is slow, presents major
problems to the attacking team – especially those which appear to
have little or no structure in their attack beyond the second and indeed
sometimes the first phase.
This video suggests methods for going about the systematic demolition
of those “brick walls”.
