Precision
and speed: the difference between a dangerous and effective attacking
backline and one that fails to make good use of the possession the forwards
work so hard to win.
In this video Australian coach Barry Honan and South African Charles Louw
work with a group of Natal U21 players to cultivate the basic skills that
improve that vital precision and speed.
Specialist backline coach Honan explains it this way: "a rugby scrumhalf
can take anything from 0.3 seconds to over 1.5 seconds from the time he
touches the ball to the instant the ball leaves his hands.
“On average, the space between the attack line and the defence line
closes faster than 1 metre for every 0.2 seconds. This means that the
scrumhalf who clears the ball in 0.5 seconds as compared to 1.0 seconds
gives his team mates at least 2.5 metes of space and 0.5 seconds of time
to operate and to make decisions."
This easy to follow video coaching tool contains key drills that will
help sharpen backline technique.
