Harry Viljoen replaced Nick Mallet as Springbok coach in October 2000 after coaching Transvaal to two successive Currie Cup finals and Natal to one before winning the Currie Cup with Western Province in 1997.

He stood down in early 2002 after South Africa failed to play to the expectations of their supporters.
